Lemon Steamed Broccoli

This is an easy, flavorful way to prepare broccoli. Neither my hubby nor I are fans of vegis, overall, but when you’re trying to pack in P90x vegetable servings, they’re a must! lol. This steamed broccoli recipe we don’t mind too much. (Such high praise, I know! lol) Sometimes he takes this in his lunch as his vegi serving and just eats it cold.

  • 1 cup fresh broccoli
  • 1/2 lemon (or lemon juice)
  • Garlic salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp sugar in the water (optional)

Place steamer basket in saucepan, fill with water until it almost comes up through basket, (optionally) add 1 tsp of sugar to water, and bring to a boil over High heat. Reduce heat to low, and place broccoli in steamer basket. Squeeze lemon half over the broccoli, then sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper to taste. Cover and steam for 5-7 minutes or until broccoli is tender. Serve with the other half of the lemon to squeeze over it.

P90x Nutrition Plan Portions:

Recipe is 1 vegi serving.

P.S. I add 1 tsp of sugar to the water to keep the broccoli from turning brown. Sugar keeps the broccoli a pretty bright green. However, I’m not really sure if any of that sugar gets into the broccoli through the steam, which would affect its nutritional value for P90x. I think it’s probably negligible, but if you decide to follow the recipe without that, your broccoli might turn a bit brown. No worries, though, the flavor should be unaffected.

P.P.S. Notice that while we’re not huge fans of vegis, my hubby is eating a variety of them. Check out my P90x nutrition basics page for my theory about Calorie Confusion!
