Creamy Pesto with Keilbasa

Imagine my exceeding great joy today when I discovered that kielbasa, one of my favorite meat ingredients of all time, comes in a lean turkey variety, 95% fat free! Woot! I’m really starting to love how turkey has been turned into a parody of all of my favorite pork products… 😉 I’ve checked the stats, and it looks like 2 oz. of turkey kielbasa is one P90x protein serving.


  • 1 full recipe Spinach Pesto
  • 1/2 cup plain nonfat yogurt (see my P.S.)
  • 4 oz. lean turkey kielbasa
  • 1 cup cooked whole wheat pasta
  • 1/2 cup artichoke hearts (optional – not pictured)
  • 3/4 oz. grated Parmesan cheese
Heat skillet over medium-high heat. Slice kielbasa and add to skillet, toasting both sides of each sausage slice until browned. Boil water and cook pasta according to package directions. Add yogurt to Spinach Pesto recipe (see my P.S.). In a saucepan over medium heat, combine cooked pasta, kielbasa, artichoke hearts, and 3 Tb. pesto sauce, stirring until heated through. (There will be extra pesto.)

P90x Diet Portions:

Full recipe is 2 protein servings, 1 dairy serving, 1 carb serving, 1/2 vegi serving (if using artichoke hearts), 1 1/2 condiment serving.

P.S. My disclaimer here is that you should try the flavors of this before you add yogurt to your whole pesto recipe. While it does make the sauce creamier, plain yogurt is very tangy and thus definitely changes the flavor of the sauce. I have some friends who swear by this and love the taste, where my hubby said that while this was still good, he prefers the plain pesto without the yogurt added. Thus, I’d recommend that you test this out on a small scale first to determine whether you like it or not before you commit!

P.P.S. If you’ve already used your carb serving for the day, try my P90x mushroom trick! Add mushrooms instead of pasta. I’d put them into the saucepan with a tiny bit of chicken broth and cook until just softened slightly, then add the other ingredients and heat through.

P.P.P.S. You bulk folks, there will be extra pesto and kielbasa, so you could easily triple this recipe to use the whole package. If you refrigerate, just add a few drops of water to it and cover lightly in the microwave so the pasta doesn’t dry out!
